This year the members of the Sputnik Association of Russian-Speaking Women in the UK and Intermix World UK took part in the famous Afro-Carribean Notting Hill Carnival In London.
We have joined the community organisation Flamboyan in West London, led by Mrs Gloria Cummins. This year the theme of the costumes was Fire! Fire! All the costumes were designed and made at the workshops organised by the Flamboyan throughout the year. Anyone who is interested in the Carnival Arts can take part in the sewing, costume making, steel band and dance workshops.
Our special thanks to Mr Osford Phiogene and Mrs Gloria Cummins for making it possible for us to take part in this spectacular event!
An international children's drawing competition - Sport Without Borders 2009 - has been held in Russia and the United Kingdom. Two qualifying rounds ended on 11 July with exhibitions in Moscow and London.
Over 70 drawings by Russian-speaking children from the United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, Sweden, Kazakhstan and Israel were exhibited in London. The youngest contestants were barely three while the oldest and most experienced ones had turned 16. "A child's imagination has no boundaries - children see things differently", says Vyacheslav Polozov, chair of the London panel. "Even a three-year-old child is able to express his or her feelings on paper". A bright mosaic of children's drawings on the walls of the historic St. Leonard's Church livened up the hall and made people feel happy and warm. The visitors of the exhibition and fair took part in the voting, and their votes will be taken into account when the results of the London round are decided. Musicians from the Art Impact Project (led by Yevgeny Shirkin) played classical music for the cello and piano, Kumushki Golubushki sang Russian folk songs with children from the Nevalyashka children's group. The Druzhba Russian School showed a programme of music and dancing called "Britain Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow", which included Morris dancing, a street dance, a song and some gymnastic exercises performed by children and teenagers from the Druzhba School and the Sputnik Association.
Our partners from the London Anti-racist Alliance and the Russian Immigrants' Association as well as representatives of the Intermix World movement were also present at the opening ceremony.
At the same time, an exhibition of drawings from the Russian round of the competition took place in the Central Russian State Children's Library at Oktyabrskaya, Moscow. In Russia, the exhibition was organised by our partners - the Moscow branch of the Intermix World international movement along with the Metis children's charitable fund. Over 90 drawings were sent to the competition from all over the Russian Federation as well as from Ukraine and Latvia. Chair of the Moscow panel, artist Katrin Kondrashina proudly pointed out that competitions of this kind give our children the main thing: an ability to use their abilities in the best possible way.

The visitors of the exhibition voted enthusiastically and gave the people's choice award to the 11-year-old Rocky Agbotsu from Moscow. A young talented singer Ike Omeh sang songs about childhood and sports for the audience. Artists Katrin Kondrashina, Yulia Jalla and the co-ordinator of the competition Alyona Brusilova draw up the results of the Moscow round. "All the children's drawings were amazing, and it was not an easy task for our panel to choose the 15 best ones", said Alyona Brusilova.

The competition will continue to Africa. The best fifteen drawings from London and Moscow each will go to Morocco to take part in regional exhibition and then to Germany. We wish all the competitors good luck!
